Your baby's first winter clothes and the photo you'll keep
Every family in a cold country has this picture: a small person in a snowsuit, arms out sideways, entirely unable to lower them.

The first proper winter outfit is the first time clothing wins.
Up to now, dressing has been an argument you mostly lose on time. This is different. This is a garment with structure and opinions, and once it's on, its wearer is subtly changed: arms out, gait wide, turning the whole body to look sideways because the neck no longer participates.
And they are, without exception, extremely pleased about it.
The photo everyone has
Every family in a cold country owns this picture. Doorstep, snowsuit, arms at forty-five degrees, an expression of complete confidence in a person who cannot independently stand up if they fall.
It gets taken because it's funny. It gets kept for longer than that, because it turns out to be one of the clearest scale photographs anyone takes all year — a small person made temporarily enormous, next to a doorframe that hasn't changed since.
"He looked like a beanbag with a face. I have that photo framed."
Everything else about that first winter
The suit is the headline. The rest goes unrecorded, and it's a stranger season than the album suggests.
The first time their own breath appears in front of them, which is an unambiguous event: everything stops. The mittens, which stay on for as long as you are looking at them. Snow arriving on a face for the first time and the completely unpredictable reaction — outrage or delight, no way to know in advance, and it decides how the next three months go.
And the dark. In the north the light goes early, and for a child who has only known long evenings, the first winter is the first time the day ends before anything else does.
Worth writing down
- How long it takes to get out of the door, honestly measured, once
- What they did the first time they saw their own breath
- Snow: outrage or delight
- What they refused to wear, and what you did about it
- What changed at bedtime when it started getting dark at four
The reason to bother
First seasons only happen once. Next winter they'll know what snow is, and the surprise — which is the whole content of this year — will be gone.
The snowsuit photo will survive on its own; that one's safe. What needs writing down is the twenty minutes before it was taken, and what the person inside the suit made of any of it.
